What Worked For You?

How do you grow spiritually?

Yes, you. how do YOU grow spiritually? You, the personal you, not a crowd of general people but you.

There must be a way that has worked for you in the past.

Was it reading a daily devotional?

Was it following particular speaker/pastor online who had podcasts or sermons?

Did you pray a familiar prayer? Perhaps the Lord’s prayer or the Jesus Prayer?

Was it taking the dog/cat/ferret/baby for a daily walk and talking with God as you went?

Think back. Thinking back is a big part of the spiritual life. We look back not just longingly but also practically to see what has worked in the past.

God often asks His people to remember and to grow by remembering. It’ a way He strengthens their resolve or renews their commitment.

“Remember the sabbath by keeping it holy” Exodus 20:8 NIV

“Remember that you were slaves in Egypt…” Deuteronomy 5:16 NIV

“…remembering me in everything and for holding onto the traditions just as I passed them on to you…” 1 Corinthians 11:2 NIV

“Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?” Matthew 16:9 NIV

So think back, either way way back or to the recent past. What has worked for you? It’s not wrong to go back to something that works. The point isn’t the method it’s about your relationship with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

It’s even possible that you’ll rediscover your optimal way to connect with God. Go back and do it again. Find that place, that time and that renewed connection with God.

Try the method that worked for you before.
